Pursuing Happiness

Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?

Sounds like something a perfectly happy, financially stable, and healthy person would say to someone who is suffering. It’s hard to hear words like this when you are going through trouble, isn’t it?

jobIt continues to surprise me to hear these words come from the mouth of arguably the most afflicted man in history. Job lost everything except his wife and life (and if you read the first 4 chapters you get the impression that it would have been more of a blessing had his wife been taken as his children and possessions were).

Too often we like to think that God’s only purpose is to make us happy. To give us nice things, healthy bodies, and a comfortable end. How often do we pray, “Lord give us….Lord please do this….” I know you do because I also struggle with these type of flittered prayers. How different would our lives be if we adopted the mind of Job?

What if we all took a second to ponder the person of God instead of just asking for things that will make our lives easier?

“I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I have and the Lord may take it away. Praise the name of the Lord!”

Just some thoughts from a sanctified sinner,
Mark
