#30DoT ~ Thankful in All Circumstances

On October 31st, Lauren was a guest blogger on her mom’s blog as part of the 30 Days of Thanksgiving that she hosts.

Here’s the post that she wrote:

We are in the midst of the Thanksgiving season, which is always a wonderful time to remember all that we are thankful for. Though sometimes it’s difficult to find things to be thankful for when life is busy or when things don’t happen the way we want them to.

During a ladies’ small group at our school, one of our neighbors pointed out, “What determines happiness in my life? My relationship with Christ? Or my circumstances?”

It’s easy to live in this fallen world, simply focusing on the negative things around us, but because of our mighty and wonderful God and Saviour, we are able to find abundant joy and contentment no matter what circumstance we find ourselves in. We can find things to be thankful for in every circumstance of our life!

“May you be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:11-14

If all God ever did for us was save us, wouldn’t that be enough to praise Him and be thankful for every day? Isn’t it so incredibly loving that His goodness to us doesn’t stop there. Not only has He saved us, but He has also given us an inheritance, and because of His love for us He provides for our every need and works everything out for our benefit, though according to His will!

My husband and I are expecting our first son to be born on December 3rd. Around 19 weeks the doctors discovered that he has a major heart defect, Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries, but this past month we found out that our baby has another serious heart defect, a Congenital Heart Block, which could possibly cause his heart to fail anytime between now and his birth.

We could easily focus on all the negative things, about how this changes our plans, how inconvenient and expensive it is to drive back and forth to all of these hospitals every week while we are living on the income of full-time students, or even how our baby’s heart could fail and he could die in the womb. But so far, we have found so much to be thankful for during this difficult time, and through focusing on Christ we are able to have such peace and joy!

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

By remembering the truths of God’s character, the truths about our identity in Christ, and being intentional to see all that we can be thankful for during this circumstance, we can rest in God’s sovereignty and have peace and joy. It truly is possible to be thankful in all circumstances!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:6,7

Thankfulness is so key!

So what are the circumstances that are getting you down, causing you frustration, or overwhelming you with worry and concern? My challenge for you is to sit down, take a moment, and meditate on the character of God and make a list of all the things you can be thankful for!

Today I am thankful for being able to feel the kicks of our little baby, and for the generosity and encouragement of the Body of Christ! We are so blessed!

In Christ,
