What Child is This?

nine days

Luke 1:26,27, “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph,
of the house of David
. And the virgin’s name was Mary.”

Jesus’ mother and earthly father were Mary and Joseph. They lived in Nazareth, a “hillbilly” town, during the time when Romans were ruling over and oppressing Israel. Mary, a virgin, was probably between the ages of 12 and 14, and was betrothed to be married to Joseph, who was also of the lineage of David. Though she was young, her maturity was shown through her response to God’s gracious will that she be the mother of the Messiah.

Luke 1:38, “And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Luke 1:46-49 “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”

Mary’s virginity was important for several reasons. First, because the Scriptures prophesied that the mother of the Messiah would be a virgin (which in itself is a miracle). Second, because it proves Jesus’ deity. Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, and thus shows how Jesus is fully God and fully man. If Joseph was Jesus’ birth father then Jesus would have been born into sin and flesh, and not able to redeem mankind. And thirdly, if Joseph was Jesus’ physical father, then Jesus could not rule as King because Joseph was one of Jehoiakim’s descendants (through Jeconiah). Joseph’s offspring could not claim David’s throne because of the curse. God cursed Jehoiakim by indicating that none of his children would sit on the throne of David (Jeremiah 36:29-31) Jesus laid claim to the throne of David (Luke 1:32, Acts 2:30, Hebrews 12:2). If Jesus had been physically born of Joseph, the curse would have been contradicted. Although Joseph was one of Jehoiakim’s offspring (through Solomon), Mary was not. She was a descendant of Nathan, one of David’s other sons (Luke 3:31). God’s promise to David was fulfilled because Mary was the biological parent of Jesus. (1)

Joseph and Mary were both two average human beings, who let God work in their lives. The situation that was arduous and probably ruined their reputations became their greatest joy and reward in life.

song of the day:

What Child Is This?

What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
