Scratch Cooking – Danishes & Bisquick Mix

I’ve been learning how to cook as many meals or goodies as I can from scratch. Not only to be frugal, but in preparation for the mission field as well. Today I attempted strawberry danishes with a recipe I received from the Hazen family in Saginaw. They were amazing! So light and fluffy, not too sweet, and so good warm from the oven 🙂 Though next time I won’t make them quite so big (they rose a lot), and I would use a little more jam.

To make your own Bisquick mix:

5 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp baking soda
3 tbsp baking powder
1 c. vegetable shortening

Mix all ingredients until crumbly. Keep in a sealed container on shelf until ready to use.


Danish Recipe
2 c. Bisquick baking mix
1/4 c. margarine (soft)
2 tbsp sugar
2/3 c. milk
1/2 jam (apricot, strawberry, grape, etc.)

Preheat oven to 450F. Lightly grease cookie sheet or stone. Mix baking mix, butter, and sugar until crumbly. Stir in milk until dough forms (don’t over stir). Drop dough into size wanted and put jam in it. Bake 10-15 minutes or till golden brown.

Glaze
2/3 c. powdered sugar
1 tbsp. warm water
1/2 tsp. vanilla

  1. Those look yummy! I've been trying to come up with March's mix to send you… I guess I should scratch the bisquik mix off, huh? : )
